Vintage Christmas Swap

Several weeks ago I participated in a Vintage Christmas Swap at Foxgloves, Fabric, and Folly. And look at all the amazing goodies I received. My wonderful swap partner was Laura from Decor to Adore. She has fabulous taste! Here's a glimpse...trinket and tidbits... handkerchiefs and lace...sweet, beautiful, crafty goodness...and inside was this shiny bauble...a recipe that I can't wait to try...and this sparkling treasure! Doesn't it make you drool? It makes me!Here are a few pages from a precious journal she made...Ahhh, I think I'm in heaven!

The Season for Giving

We normally put together shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse project at Christmastime with the boys. But, this year I decided to do something a little different. Maybe it's because this was an election year, and I've focused more on what my country means to me. Maybe it was because I wanted to do something to help out an actual American. I don't know! But I did know that I was going to find something different to do with the joys this year. I searched the web and discovered TroopCarePackage.com. It's a one-woman operation that connects troops with families interested in sponsoring a soldier. It took me about 30 seconds to read enough of the website to know that I had found our new Christmas project! I sent an email to Angel and asked to sponsor a troop for Christmas. Within 48 hours I had the name, address, and interest list of our family's troop.

We spent a week or so discussing the branches of the military and researching the ship our sailor is on. We talked about the items on his interest list. Then, we culminated our studies with a trip to Sam's. Our sailor had simple requests: soup, oatmeal, beef jerky, and Ramen noodles.

We picked up all of his goodies, and even found a few more to add. In all, we sent 30 bags of oatmeal, 6 cans of soup, 3 bags of terriyaki beef jerky, 4 packs of Ramen noodles, 2 pouches of StarKist Tuna Fillets (not pictured), and 7 pouches of hot cocoa. The boys also made cards and drawings to include in the box. I wrote a short note to explain to him who we were and how we got his name and address. This is definitely a project I want to do again with the joys! The only complaint I have is that the shipping box (APO Priority) was too small to hold everything we bought! That's OK though! We will sponsor our troop until he returns home in March of next year. After that, we'd like to either sponsor two troops, or sponsor one that will be deployed longer. That way we can still buy in bulk and send out multiple packages. Besides, I think it will be even more enjoyable to have a longer amount of time to truly connect with our troop.

Please consider sponsoring a troop! Angel's website includes a list of items that are needed, and items that are not allowed. She also gives step-by-step directions on how to mail your packages, including how to fill out customs packages. It was EASY!!!

Remember, these men and women are serving our country! They are helping to protect us and our families!

Homeschooling mamas~ think of the wonderful lessons you can create around this service project! And think of what it will truly be teaching your child!

Bah Humbug 2008

Can I vent? I love my joys! I love Christmas! And I even love Santa! But I'm frustrated. We always take the joys to see the same Santa at the same mall. We've done this since Cameron was 3 and Wyatt was 1. I like consistency! I'm OCD like that! But ding-dang it y'all! They switched Santas on me this year! The joys couldn't tell, so that was good! But I knew! And it frustrated me! It didn't help that this Santa was a mouthy, grumpy Santa. Or that I was in a mouthy, grumpy mood myself!

Here Santa is about to tell Cameron that he'll get in trouble with the Nerf gun he asked for. It was "A Christmas Story"- style, but it got on my already-lacking nerves!
Here Santa appears to be on the verge of a smile. The only one he flashed for my camera! Seems the mall no longer wants parents to use their own cameras. Regardless of the fact that we were shelling out $12 for a 5x7 speed-printed on $0.25 paper. Ugh!

Thank you for bearing with me through my negativity filled rant! They seem to be in abundance right now! Sorry! I'm blaming it on the full moon!

Now on to what truly makes me smile! SUPERMAN! God knows, I love that man! He saves the day quite often! He rescues me! He loves me when I'm grumpy and fussy and mean! In fact, he's earned a lot of jewels for his crown in the eleven years we've been together... A LOT!And Superman knows how to rectify my moods! He and Cameron surprised me by putting up the tree one day this week while Wyatt and I were gone to PT.Ahhh, I feel better!

I'll be back with happy posts soon!
I promise!

The Thanksgiving Chair & The View

This was the scene early Thanksgiving morning. THE Baby with MY Baby. And a little later in the day MY Baby squished in it again with Paw Paw. Before lunch, Nannie arrived. As matriarch of the family, she booted all the boys out of the comfy chair and took up residence...for most of the day! She's feisty like that! After seconds and probably thirds from the yummy Thanksgiving meal, Superman snuck out for a walk with my camera. Here are a few of the shots of the view from the cabin.Although I like to pretend I'm the photographer in the family, Superman really is!But, shhhhh! Don't tell him I told you!
